No other period in history can claim anything like so vast a bibliography, a fact which amply demonstrates that the problems and motives at issue are profoundly buried: thus, they either resist our customary methods of historical investigation, however conscientious, or can only partially be brought to light. Historical research therefore should borrow from, or yield to, the methods employed by psycho-analysis which, more penetrative, can continue the task where other kinds of investigation fail.
